Eidfjord

As our cruise is quickly dimming to an end, we had one last port stop in Eidfjord.

Our ship traveled 8 hours overnight down the Eidfjord fjord arriving in the small town of Eidfjord ealy in the morning. The surrounding mountains were beautiful and a bit erie with the low cloud cover.

There was little to do in the town so we had a leisurely breakfast before getting off of the ship for our excursion which I booked pretty last minute because one of the descriptions of the area indicated that the canyon was not to be missed. We were thrilled that the clouds started to raise shortly before we departed.

Our excursion bus traveled about an hour up into the mountains above the tree line to a lodge where we enjoyed Norwegian waffles with jam and sour cream. I had hoped we’d get a chance to have Norwegian waffles on this trip so I was happy to learn we’d have this stop. The lodge was the farthest we traveled on the excursion.

We had 2 stops on the way back down the mountains to Eidfjord. Our first stop was to the Syden Dam, one of the largest stone dams in Norway. We stopped here for about 30 minutes and had the opportunity to walk out on the top of the dam where the views were beautiful

Our last stop was to the Vøringsfossen waterfall with magnificent view of the the surrounding Måbødalen valley. We had plenty of time to walk out on the platforms and paths overlooking the waterfall. Part of the platform was a flexible metal that went out over the canyon making me a bit dizzy. I was able to snap some decent photos however. The views are quite amazing.

We arrived back in the port about 4:45 PM and took a short walk near the ship. We stopped in a small gallery just before it closed Some of the art was unusual and amusing.

We stopped at a few souvenir shops in Eidfjord to use up the rest of our Norwegian cash before heading back to the ship. Tonight was the traditional Azamara White Party on the ship. We ate at the ship’s buffet restaurant and really enjoyed the lobster tails and the sushi.

After dinner we had a great time in the Cabaret Theater where we really enjoyed the entertainment. They also served up crepe suzettes made by some of the ship’s officers.
