Southern Point of Africa
Our travels today took us outside the city of Cape Town. We stopped for a pit stop/coffee break at Imhoff Farm Market. The term farm market does not do the establishment justice, it was more a local community arts and craft complex. The store/ cafe sold delicious pastries and coffee along with other locally made products and the property housed a number of small boutique craft shops. We wished we had more time to spend just walking though the shops.
From the Imhoff Market we traveled on to Table Mountain National Park where we saw elands,(the largest antelope and ostriches grazing in the wild. As we drove towards the Cape of Good Hope which is located in the park, we saw a number of signs warning people that it is illegal and dangerous to feed the baboons and others warning of venomous Cape Cobra snakes. Thankfully we saw neither baboons or snakes all day.
When we reached the Cape of Good Hope everyone had a chance to get pictures in front of the Cape of Good Hope sign. We also had some time to just enjoy the beautiful scenery and the marine wildlife.
A short ride from the Cape of Good Hope we stopped at Cape Point where we rode the Flying Dutchman Funicular up to an area with spectacular views. The wind at the top and on the 15 minute walk down to the parking area was very windy and a bit cool, but it was sunny. We have been so fortunate that every place we’ve stopped has been sunning, even if it was heavily overcast shortly before we arrived. Such has definitely been on our side.
Our lunch stop was a 45 minute drive from Cape Point where it was also very windy, but still sunny. From the the restaurant it was a short walk to the entrance to a protected area of Boulder Beach where a colony of endangered African penguins live. For many in our group, my self included seeing the penguins in the wild capped off a great day of touring.
As we traveled back tot he hotel it started to rain and the rain continued for much of the evening. We had a group dinner near the hotel which everyone enjoyed.
Tomorrow we will have a later start - 9:15 AM so we get to sleep in for a bit in the morning.
